CNN —
I was dubious when I first heard about the Moon Pod, a zero-gravity version of the iconic beanbag chair that promises to relieve stress. As a kid of the 1980s, I spent much of my time spread out on beanbag chairs, from the time I was little until I graduated from college, and the thought of bringing one of those sagging, drooping chairs back into my house made me shudder.
The Moon Pod, however, is the newest creation of John Fiorentino, the inventor of the Gravity Blanket, which is one of my all-time favorite items – ever. It’s been more than three years since I’ve used the Gravity Blanket, and to say it’s transformed my life would be an understatement. Whereas I used to have inconsistent sleep and excessive anxiety, I now fall asleep fast and effortlessly, getting at least eight hours of deep REM sleep every night. I was more than eager (and ready!) to give Fiorentino’s newest stress-relieving gadget a try, given his previous success with Gravity Blanket.

Moon Pod
Moon Pod, welcome to my home. At first glance, I was pleased to find that new version of the beanbag is a significant improvement over the previous one in terms of aesthetics. The chair is taut and bean-shaped, with a soft, elastic outer shell that is sleek and contemporary in appearance (and machine-washable!). While I won’t place it in my formal living room, it’s a great choice for more informal areas such as family rooms, playrooms, or children’s bedrooms.
Moon Pods come in five different hues (navy, charcoal, light gray, light pink, and light blue) and are very large. The beanbag is very portable, weighing little under 12 pounds and takes up just over 4 square feet of area (precise dimensions are 50 inches by 20 inches by 20 inches, give or take a few inches in any direction owing to its amorphous form). My gray version has been parked in my sons’ room for a few weeks, but my cousin, who recently purchased one for her baby’s nursery, admitted that she and her husband are constantly moving it around the house to wherever baby is playing on the floor, adding that they prefer the cozy, low-to-the-ground chair option chock-full of support to the hardwood floor, which is brutal on their backs. She also utilizes the Moon Pod at the foot of the stairs as an impromptu baby gate!
If you don’t mind sacrificing some mobility in exchange for the opportunity to snuggle up with a friend, the Super Moon Pod, which is twice the size of the original, is the way to go.

Aside from its aesthetics and mobility, the Moon Pod’s main selling feature is its cloudlike sitting. The Moon Pod chair is designed to replicate the feelings of flotation treatment. Whether you’re sitting, reclining, or laying down, the Moon Pod is extremely supportive, adapting to your body and every adjustments you make. Unlike old-school beanbags, which had you falling to the floor and often leaving you with an aching lower back, Moon Pod seems to cup your body, keeping you constantly high, and simulates the sensation of floating, which is, unsurprisingly, completely soothing. The chair is thick, downy, and dreamy, thanks to its high-friction microbeads.
The Moon Pod has a dedicated following, with over 1,200 favorable reviews and a stunning 4.9-star rating on its website, and my 6- and 7-year-old boys are now part of that group. When they weren’t fighting over who got to use the Moon Pod — which became the focal point of a small reading nook I built in their room — the boys would sit peacefully on the chair’s cushioned seat and read books. My emphasis is on the term “quiet”; really, this chair calmed down my boisterous kids, which is no easy accomplishment for parents of young boys. And don’t worry, it’s also suitable for grownups. My husband is 6 feet 2 inches tall and would read the kids a story on the chair every night, so it can easily accommodate someone taller with a child on their lap. Did I mention that my dog is enamored with it as well? It’s also pet-friendly.
My only criticism is that when not in use, the Moon Pod lays flat on the ground and isn’t very attractive (thus why it won’t be placed in my formal living room). However, both the Moon Pod and the Super Moon Pod do what they set out to do: they are both supportive, comfortable chairs that provide a super-relaxing experience.
